Suttee is the practice that occurred in India of a woman burning herself on the funeral, either with the her husbands body or, if he had died somewhere else, separately. These events known as suttee were taking place as early as 316 b.c until the British stopped this tradition in 1829. At first the act of suttee was voluntary and considered a privilege, but in some orthodox communities if any woman refused to perform, she was ostracized.

( I think this picture shows how common suttee was in India. the reason why I say this is because of the laughing and convorsation in the background. )

The religion that fallowed by suttee is Hinduism. The religion with many gods and goddesses. According to the religion of Hinduism, there are three Lords that rule the world. Brahma: the creator; Vishnu: the preserver and Shiva: the destroyer. Lord Vishnu preserving the world by incarnating himself in different forms at different times of crisis. Widows that fallowed Hinduism that took part in suttee believed it to be an honor. Others didn’t feel so strongly about it and was punished for their rebellion.

( This picture represents how big of a deal suttee was, because of all the people gathered for this event. )

Spanning back to the beginning of the human civilization. Beginning with the culture along the Indus River and in farming communities in the southern lands of India. India is a place where religions allowed people to adapt to and absorb many of the mountain passes. No matter how many Greeks, Persians, Arabs, Chinese nomads, British, Portuguese and other raiders had their way with the land, local Hindu kingdoms survived their troubles, living out their own collapse and conquest.

(Womens rights in India)
Women in India were dominated by men. Women were slaves of their husbands. They were often used cruelly. Their lives were marked by unending labor, the kind of labor that was looked down upon. Things that the women had to do was cooking, wash clothes, clean the house, and take care of the children. Women were denied education and cultural development, most of the time they were not allowed to step out of her home. If she did, she wore a veil and could not interact with people unless her husband allowed it.

( this is a picture of an Indian women in a veil.)

Caste system / social classes
India was devided into 5 different social classes. The highest social class at the top of its caste is the Brahmins - Priests. the class below them is the Kshatriyas which is the warrors and the rulers. Under them is the Vaisyas, the Skilled traders, merchants, and minor offocials. below the Vaisyas is the Sudras which is the unskilled workers. The last social class and at the bottom of there caste is the Pariah "Harilans"- the outcastes "untouchables".
