All about Terrorism:

According to dictionary.com, Terrorism is defined as: "the use of violence or threats to intimidate or coerce for political purposes." However, to victims of this violence, terrorism has a much more powerful defenition. Terrorism has been around since the 1800's; affecting lives of billions of people and animals, and even harming the enviorment. Since the 1800's, there have been approximately eighty terrorist attacks and twenty-one failed attacks. The very first recorded terrorist attack was on May 21, 1856. This attack was known as: The Sacking of Lawrence. During this attack, pro-slavery forces invaded Lawrence, Kansas, disarmed the people, and took away their free rights. The two most well-known terrorist attacks are The Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995, and The 9/11 Twin Towers Attack.

The chart below shows the international terrorist incidents, the international terrorism fatalities and the international terrorism injuries from 1968-2007.

Statistics on terrorism

Note: Due to varying definitions and completeness of reporting, the data below may not constitute reliable time series. This is especially true for data from 2000-2007. On the specific series:
  • The U.S. Department of State figures (from Patterns of Global Terrorism and Country Reports on Terrorism) are affected by multiple changes in the DOS interpretation of Palestinian terrorism in Israel and counting of terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan. Following replacement of the annual Patterns of Global Terrorism reports with annual Country Reports on Terrorism in 2004, reported statistics (beginning in 2005) are collected by the National Counterterrorism Center and are based on different methodologies and definitions than statistics used in previous reports.
  • The RAND series from 1968 to 1997 is supplemented by MIPT/RAND data from 1998 to 2006. MIPT also includes data on domestic terrorism, which is also listed. MIPT data on injuries is known to be incomplete, particularly in regard to the 9/11 attacks. Post-2000 data is also particularly affected by interpretations of terrorism in Israel and Iraq, which account for most incidents and casualties. In early 2008 funding support for open access to the MIPT/RAND database ended, and access is currently by subscription only.

The Oklahoma City Bombing

Timothy McVeigh
Timothy McVeigh

Picture 3

The Oklahoma City Bombing took place in the morning hours of April 19, 1995. At 9:02 a.m., The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building was bombed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma..an event that would devastate America. Timothy McVeigh, along with a few others that will be mentioned later, was the evil felon behind this catastrophe.

McVeigh was motivated by the Federal Goverment's handling of Ruby Ridge (1992) and Waco Seige (1993), both involving murder. McVeigh, however, wasn't completley alone, and had reported his thoughts on the attack to a dear friend: Terry Nicholas. Nicholas was McVeigh's main accomplice. Also, he knew of the attack from the get-go and failed to report it. This is what ultimately landed Nicholas in prison for the rest of his life. Also, two other people had heard of McVeigh's plot: Michael and Lori Fortier. However, neither was present during the bombing. Michael Foriner was sentenced to twelve years in prison for not warning the goverment of McVeigh's planned attack. Lori Fortier, however, decided, in exchange for being prosecuted, to testify against McVeigh during his trial.

During the bombing, 646 people were inside The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. By the end of April 19th, 20 people were pronounced dead, including 6 children, and 100+ people were injured. However, the overall death tole came to 168 and the injusry tole came to 680, ranging in ages 3-73. There were 3 pregnant women killed, 99 federal officals, 19 children, and 47 everyday Americans. Days after the attack, someone found a leg, this evidence suggest there were possibly 169 people killed. There were 1,800 phone calls made the morning of the bombing; the first call made at 9:03 a.m.. Also, 1,200 rescue workers responded. The investigation was named OKBOMB. It was the largest criminal investigation in United States History. There were 28,000 people interviewed and 3.5 tons of evidence against McVeigh. McVeigh was stopped 90 mintues after the attack, by State Trooper: Charlie Hanger, for driving without a license plate. However, forensic evidence is what linked McVeigh to the bombing.

Timothy McVeigh's trial started on April 24, 1997, 2 years after the attack. Lori Foriner and McVeigh's sister, along with the prosecution testified against McVeigh. The jury deliberated for 23 hours. Finally, Timothy McVeigh was found guilty, sentenced to 11 counts of murder and conspiracy. He ulitmately recieved the death pentalty. On June 11, 2001, Timothy McVeigh was killed by lethal injection. It was transmitted on closed-circut television so relatives of his victims could witness his death. On April 19, 2000, Oklahoma City National Memorial was dedicated to The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in memory and in honor of McVeigh's victims. Terrorist Attacks of 9/11
external image 9-11-processen-zijn-overwinning-voor-al-qaida_5_460x0.jpg
Picture 4

On September 11, 2001, the lives of the American people were changed forever. At 8:46 a.m. American Airlines fight 11 crashed into The World Trade Center's North tower, located in New York City, New York. At 9:03 a.m. United Airlines Fight 175 crashed into The World Trade Center's South tower. At 9:37 a.m. American Airlines flight 77 crashed into The Pentagon. At 10:03 a.m. United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field located in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

This was the beginning of what we know today as: The 9/11 Twin Towers Terrorist Attack. The terrorist attack was an aircraft hijacking, mass murder, and suicide attack all in one. United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed into Shanksville, Pennsylvania was headed to either the White House or the Capitol Building. However, the passengers of the flight fought the hijackers right up until the crash. The South Tower of The World Trade Center collapsed at 9:59 a.m., burning for 56 minutes. The North Tower of The World Trade Center collapsed at 10:28 a.m., burning for 102 minutes. There were 19 hijackers between all four planes; fifteen hijackers were from Saudi Arabia, two were from United Arab Emirates, one was from Egypt, and one was from Lebanon. However, Osama Bin Laden was believed responsible for the attack according to the F.B.I.. Not only were their no survivors, but the death of the victims wasn't instant either.

According to evidence, the hijackers used weapons (knives) to stab the pilots of the aircrafts, ultimately leading to murder. The hijackers also used tear gas and pepper spray, along with weapons to kill the fight attendents and passengers. From The World Trade Center, 2,605 people were killed. From the Pentagon, 125 people were killed. From American Airlines Flight 11, 87 people were killed. From United Airlines Flight 175, 60 people were killed. From American Airlines Flight 77, 59 people were killed. From United Airlines Flight 93, 40 people were killed. Approximately 200 people jumped out of the collapsing buildings to their deaths. Approximately 411 emergency rescue workers died. Over 6,000 people were injured and the ultimate death toll became 6,000 people dead.

Because of the 9/11 Twin Towers Attack, President George Bush declared "War on Terrorism" to Afghanistan.

Hood Shooting

On November 5, 2009, America once again shook their head to what was happening around them when Nidal Malik Hasan took his Islamic belief of jihad to an extreme. Hasan is the accused suspect of The Fort Hood Shooting.

At approximately 1:34 p.m. on November 5, 2009, Hasan walked inside his workplace, the most populated Military Base in the world, located just outside of Killen, Texas, where he worked as a U.S Military Psychiatrist, and took a seat at an empty table. He then bowed his head and stayed that way for only a few seconds. Hasan then proceeded to stand up, jump up on a table and yell, "Allahu Akbar!," which in Islam means, "God is the greatest!". After that, Hasan opened fire for more than 100 rounds. The attack lasted approximately 10 minutes. Hasan was then shot by civilian police officers. Currently, he is paralyzed from the waist down and resides at Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

During the shooting, Hasan killed 13 people (11 died at the scene) and injured 30. The deaths range in age from 19-62. However, Hasan wasn't alone in his thoughts to plot this attack. Emails were exchanged between Hasan and Anwar al-Awaki (former Islam leader) from December of 2008 until June of 2009. In the emails, Hasan asked al-Awaki when jihad (a struggle or conflict to spread Islam) was appropriate. Even with the suspicious e-mails, the F.B.I terrorism task forces determined that Hasan wasn't a threat to the U.S.A until the shooting.

Hasan is currently charged with 13 counts of murder and 32 counts of attempted murder. He may face additional charges at court-martial. Statistics show that 63% of Americans want the death pentalty for Hasan ,and 60% of Americans want his attack to be investigated as an act of terrorism. However, Hasan's defense is fighting for Hasan by saying that the attack was was because Hasan is insane.
